A continuation of the work done for my final major project Titania for part one please follow this link: https://natashamakins.wixsite.com/natashamakins/post/__fmp

Realisation : Dress Pattern

Originally I was going to create the dress pattern using bookcloth I have marbled on using nail varnish but after some considerate and a few tests on scrap fabric that this wouldn't be the best option to pursue.

I decided to try out using poscas to draw the pattern directly onto the print (I tried this first on the text piece). Although I think this looks nice I don't think it has the same quality and delicateness to it that the rest of the additions too and subtracts from the image a little. Maybe if I had a smaller pen it could work? I am also not sure how the pattern how the pattern would interact with the fabric in the way that it is folded, honestly, without a reference image it is a little hard for me to make this accurate... For this composition I think just keeping the dress simple and plain is the best way to go...

Realisation : Final Photographs

For the presentation photographs of my final piece I booked the copy stand to ensure they would be of a high quality. It was interesting to play with the the exposure and shutter-speed to achieve different results with the colours. It was difficult to balance it in a way that didn't leave the whites looking too grey or the colours looking too bright, in the end I had to reach a compromise and edit the curves and vibrance in photoshop after to achieve both bright whites and bold colours in the same image.

Realisation : Experimenting with Photography

As I had a little time left in the copy stand room after taking the pictures I needed I decided to play around a little while I still had a source of nice lighting to hand. I looked at trying to make her form seem more 3D by looking at the image from different angles and putting objects underneath to get some interesting curves and shadows. I think this could be really interesting if I put more time into really moulding the shapes but I'm not convinced this is how I want to present my work so I wont put any more time into this idea for now.

Realisation : PDF Design Plan

In addition to the multi-media piece as my final outcome I also want to create a Designed PDF of my developmental work in a similar style to one of my previous projects. Working on this outcome has made me realise how important my developmental work is to my practise and how it is one of the things that distinguishes from other in the field I want to go into. Above is the designed PDF outcome I created for my Minor project, I will be using this as a guideline.

Here is the design plan for my PDF, instead of having a pink colour scheme as the last one did I will be going forward with a purple one. As in my previous PDF I used excerpts from the book that described the characters, instead for this one I will be finding my favourite quotes by or about Titania as she is never fully described in the play. I highlighted these during my read through earlier on in the project.

Realisation : Evaluation

Over the course of this project I feel I have truly pushed myself to achieve something that not only fits into the categories of what I want to do in industry, but also helps to show who I am as a creative. I have managed to combine the ‘industry standard’ with things that get me excited to work, things that I thought would be ‘off limits’ to me because of the industry I want to be a part of, and I am really proud of that. My research question for this project was ‘Can a mixture of traditional and digital methods be combined to create a character concept piece that not only serves its purpose, but also is an artwork within itself?’ I think the answer to this question is yes. However, there are limitations to what can be achieved within one piece. For Example: Because of compositional reasons that come with creating an art piece (in comparison to a character design sheet) some of the details in Titania’s design were unable to be included such as the pattern on her dress or her flower crown. Another problem that occurs is that when positioning a character in a more considered manner, one is unable to see how something like the dress would fall when she is standing up (which is how she would most likely be positioned the majority of the time). Although these may seem like big problems, I have considered them and there is a simple solution, just making more! If this piece was accompanied by say a headshot of Titania as well as a composition in which she was standing, neither of these ‘issues’ would be present. This is an idea I will take with me on my journey into industry, as I believe the style of working I have discovered during this project is something that could really help me stand out to employers when looking for jobs. Throughout this brief I found a way of working that is true to myself and found what is important to me when working. Looking back at everything I have created over my final year in university has helped me to realise just how important the experimental stages of an idea are to how I create. I put so much time and effort into this stage that it almost becomes an outcome in itself. Looking back through my blog and making my assessment PDF showed me this. Being able to incorporate the actual development process as a part of my final outcome in the form of a designed PDF is amazing, I started to play with this idea during my Minor Project at the start of the year and I didn’t realise how important that was to me until now.

In conclusion, along with helping me to grow and develop my visual identity, this project has also taught me what I value as a creative and has given me a critical insight into the way I work that I have never noticed before. This is priceless and I am so excited to see how it will help me to achieve even more as I leave university and enter the working world of creatives.
